Dear Reader,
The Gobar Times Green Schools Programme (GSP) was launched by the Centre for Science and Environment (CSE) in 2006. It is our privilege to invite you to be our partner in the sixth edition of the programme. Currently, more than 15,000 schools across India are participating in the GSP to monitor and improve their ‘Green Performance'.
As part of the programme, school students conduct an audit of the resources used in their school campus and the waste generated by them. The self-audit is done using the GSP Manual, available in English, Hindi, Telugu, Kannada, Gurmukhi and Urdu. The Manual will be available in Gujarati soon.
As part of the programme, participating schools do a 500 point self-audit, assessing their school’s water, air, land, energy and waste practices. The next step is creating the Green Schools Report that benchmarks environmental practices of the school community and helps them identify areas that demand their attention. CSE verifies these reports and the best are then awarded for their efforts at both state and central levels. The states of Delhi, Himachal Pradesh and Sikkim have constituted the Chief Minister's Rolling Trophy for the best school in their states.
This year is very exciting. We are strengthening the GSP with a continuous assessment process, certification of schools, participating students and teachers, an improved training programme, valuable new products and the fresh, enriching website you are on right now!
We have just launched an exciting activity book for middle, secondary and senior secondary students. It will enable them to learn about environment by engaging in out-of-the-ordinary activities. Our soon to be launched second GSP manual – ‘How green is my locality?' – will enable schools to engage their neighbourhood in their efforts to save the environment.
We urge your school to take part in this programme and become a part of the Gobar Times Green Schools Community that is rapidly emerging as a major force in the field of environment education.
